tips to remove carpet stains

Carpet accidents will always happen. Fortunately, there are tips and tricks to fight those stubborn stains that bother you so much. The secret with carpet stains is to remove them while fresh. If your carpet has become the victim of a drop, spill, or other accident, try these carpet stains removal tips.

Remove the Excess

Immediately after a spill, remove any excess food or beverage from the carpet. If you’re dealing with food, pick up or scrape off any excess solids with a butter knife or spoon. For liquid messes, gently blot the spill with an absorbent white, clean cloth. Remember to always blot, never rub in a stain.

Apply a Carpet Cleaner

Next, you’ll want to apply a carpet cleaning agent, but not any cleaner will do. Whether it’s a homemade stain remover or store-bought formula, you’ll want to ensure that the ingredients are safe to use on rugs, especially colored rugs as some ingredients can cause discoloration. If possible, test the carpet cleaning product on a small area of carpet in an inconspicuous spot.

Blot the Stain Away

Once the cleaning agent has had a few minutes to sit and work its magic, you’ll want to blot the stain again. To achieve optimal carpet stains removal, use an absorbent, clean, white cloth to blot from the outside of the stain towards the middle. Use cool water to blot the stain, as hot water can cause the stain to set further. Continue to blot the carpet until the stain is gone.

Dry the Carpet

Once you’ve eliminated the stain, you’ll want to do your best to dry the carpet. Carpets that are left wet are more susceptible to harmful mold growth. Use a clean white cloth to absorb any excess moisture in the carpet. You can also leave a few paper towels on top of the carpet to absorb excess moisture. Encourage the moisture to evaporate by aiming a household fan at the wet carpeting or by pointing a hair dryer at the wet spot. Carpet stains can’t always be avoided, but you can eliminate them as quickly as they came. For optimal carpet stains removal, you’ll want to follow a few simple steps to quickly remove any excess solids or liquids, followed by the use of a carpet-friendly cleaning agent. For stains that cannot be removed on your own, consider the help of a professional carpet cleaning company.
